The 442 refers to a four-speed floor-mounted manual transmission, four-barrel carburetor, and dual exhausts. Oldsmobile first made the 442 as an option on the F-85 and Cutlass models in 1964, which was the beginning of the muscle car era in the American car industry. In 1968 the 442 became a separate model in the Oldsmobile line of cars. It could be ordered as a bare bones performance car with none of the options that would add weight to the car or the 442 could be loaded up as luxury performance vehicle.
