Don’t try to tell Van LaMothe that state legislation can’t have a very direct impact on a collision-repair shop. LaMothe, the manager of Bill Pearce Collision Center in Reno, Nev., said that in 2011, the state trade association helped back enactment of a state law that now excludes the cost of painting, towing and replacement of any electronic components from the total loss calculation; a vehicle is now declared a total loss in Nevada if the cost of repairs, other than these excluded items, exceeds 65 percent of the vehicle’s value.
