With the end of WWII the American auto industry could get back on the track of making vehicles for the public. Most the cars and trucks made from 1946 to 1948 were warmed over designs of pre-WWII cars. Ford and GM changed that with the introduction of their new 1949 models. Their new styling made a difference to the car buying public. 

Chrysler president K.T. Keller did not see styling as a major factor. Chrysler was noted for good engineering, but design was not a strong point.
