I think I first talked to Paul Shauck back around late February or early March of 2022. His shop, Hot Rods & Threads in College Grove, Tenn., had built a strong reputation in the Nashville area for car customization and restoration. Over the phone, Paul confirmed he was interested in doing a profile on his business, and we arranged a time frame for an interview later in the week.
When I called back, however, Peggy Brandau, Paul’s daughter and office manager, informed me he had gone home, feeling sick. No problem, I told her, I’ll just wait a couple weeks and call back later. As it turned out, it’s was nearly a month before I got around to calling him back on April 6, 2022. Peggy once again answered the phone, only to inform me that Paul had passed away the day before. …
