At first blush, the shop name “Hard Luck Auto Services” only hints at the extraordinary services that combat veteran Adam Ely and his volunteer team are providing for downtrodden motorists. The non-profit Midwest City, Okla., operation, near Oklahoma City, repairs vehicles at absolutely no cost if customers can buy parts.
Three of the four Hard Luck volunteers, said Ely, have 25 years of experience in combat zones. Today they’re fighting a different battle, helping keep customers and their families from ruin.
“The bulk of our clientele is either facing homelessness or they are homeless,” said Ely, who partners with such non-profits as the Battered Women’s Shelter to locate needy customers.
