Part 2: How Employers Can Deal with Changing State Laws

As more states liberalize their marijuana laws, employers find themselves in a tough position. On the one hand, they must conform to a more liberalized environment which allows the use of marijuana for recreational and medical purposes. On the other hand, they must mitigate the risks associated with cannabis use—including possible declines in worker productivity and potential lawsuits by customers or employees harmed by impaired workers.

Rather than design workplace policies that accommodate these competing forces, employers too often let the issue simmer on the back burner. That can prove costly when a problem arises.
