Some see ADAS raising the need for more checks on vehicle maintenance, performance

About 15 states, including Alabama, Louisiana and Texas, currently have some sort of periodic safety inspection for vehicles, though that number has continued to dwindle over the years as the effectiveness of the inspections — and the time and fees involved for consumers — get called into question.

But some in the automotive industry see the complex and safety-critical nature of the advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) on virtually all new vehicles as bringing a renewed need for some type of either periodic or transaction-based safety inspection (at the time of a vehicle sale). Existing state programs likely need to evolve, they argue, to check more than just tires and lights — and more states are likely to want to find ways to ensure driver assistance features are functioning properly.

That was the consensus among panelists at a discussion during a recent Collision Industry Conference (CIC)…
