Collision repair shops share ideas others may want to implement in their business

Andy Tylka of the Tag Auto Group, which operates 15 body shops in Indiana, said just as entry-level employees at a shop can be move ahead faster if teamed with a mentor, shop owners too can benefit from finding an “owner-mentor.”

“I know other shop owners have zero problem being transparent about their business,” Tylka said. “If there’s a shop out there that sees another shop that’s with a business model they want to follow, they need to reach out to them, because I will almost guarantee that owner is more than happy to mentor them on how to get there. We’ve made tons of mistakes to get to where we are. So we might as well teach others what mistakes we already made. I do encourage shops to find an owner-mentor. You’ll get ahead a lot quicker.”

Getting ready for EVs

Shops that haven’t yet geared up to work on electric vehicles might want to first talk to some others that have. 

“The normal two-post lift is not going to be the future, in my opinion,” Barry Dorn, a body shop owner in Virginia, whose company is certified to repair a number of automaker’s EVs, said.
